The Knowledge Exchange Program aims to improve leadership in organisations by helping more staff and students boost their skills through exchanges between government, higher education, not-for-profit sector and industry sectors. 

How will the program work?

The Knowledge Exchange Program has three elements:

  1. Employee exchanges between the public sector, universities and the not-for-profit sector, with four streams being developed:
  • Employee mobility program for general and professional staff
  • Academic sabbatical placement
  • Guest sessional lecturing
  • Dual appointments.
  1. Student work experience and internships. The program will streamline the process of gaining work experience across government agencies and encourage the higher education sector to explore widening courses where internships are offered for course credits.
     
  2. Industry placements will help staff move across all sectors to transfer skills, build networks and generate innovation by breaking down the barriers between sectors.

The program aims to:

  • Strengthen skills, management and leadership in organisations and sharing expertise in areas of strategic importance to the state
  • Provide opportunities for academic staff to engage with their industry or professional practice, and to then share these contemporary ideas with their students
  • Link policy makers with researchers to work through complex policy issues
  • Develop business relationships across sectors
  • Provide opportunities to network with other professionals.

What are the benefits?

The employee, their employer and organisation all benefit from student exchanges. They help people share knowledge, information and different perspectives between academia, the public sector and service providers. The exchanges will improve understanding between sectors leading to greater collaboration.

Exchanges are also a good way improve expertise and knowledge, and will provide excellent professional development opportunities by enhancing employee knowledge, experience, and skills through ‘immersion’ and ‘learning by doing’. This should assist in better evidence-based policy and planning.

How can you get involved?

The Department of State Development manages the Knowledge Exchange Program and will facilitate matching employee to agencies, universities and key not-for profit providers, as well as providing branding, promotion and process advice and factsheets.
